JEFFREY HARGRAVE
(USA)
Jeffrey Spencer Hargrave is an African-American artist from Salisbury, North Carolina, who now lives and works in New York City. His art draws from his personal experiences growing up in the racially divided South and takes shape in paintings, sculptures, and videos that explore complex themes such as identity, class, religion, sexuality, and race.
Hargrave is known for reinterpreting art historical works—particularly those by artists like Matisse—by incorporating African-American figures, challenging stereotypical representations. Combining humor, satire, and social critique, his works surprise and engage viewers. By reimagining familiar images and symbols, he sparks a dialogue about societal power structures and prejudices.
His works have been exhibited at notable venues, including two group shows at Stalke Gallery, and he has participated in solo and group exhibitions across the United States, Europe, and Africa. Hargrave’s art is both provocative and thought-provoking, inviting reflection on historical and contemporary perspectives on identity and privilege.
