THORBJØRN LAUSTEN
(DK)
Thorbjørn Lausten (b. 1945, Denmark) is an artist with a background rooted in constructive and concrete art. Since debuting in 1966, he has explored a wide range of mediums, including paintings, drawings, installations, light works, light rooms, and data visualizations. His artistic approach incorporates a tightly structured use of geometrical forms and luminous points, creating immersive spaces that invite viewers to step inside. These spaces often dissolve into light, with ethereal drawings on the walls offering a sense of orientation. The interaction between light, space, and time is central to Lausten's work, engaging the viewer not from an external standpoint but by placing them within the work itself.
Lausten’s art challenges us to transform our perception—turning simple sights into deeper insights. His creations forge a bridge between the visible world and mental activity, blending the concrete with the imaginary. This transformation of space is not only an aesthetic experience but a psychological one as well.
Lausten's contributions to the art world have been widely recognized. He has received the prestigious Statens Kunstfonds three-year stipend and lifelong state support, along with the Eckersberg Medal, the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen's Legat, and the Critics' Prize as a curator. His work has been featured in solo exhibitions at renowned institutions such as the Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum, Statens Museum for Kunst, CAVS/MIT, Fyns Kunstmuseum, Esbjerg Kunstmuseum, Museum am Ostwall Dortmund, and ZKM Karlsruhe.
Since 1987, Thorbjørn Lausten has exhibited with Stalke Gallery, both in group and solo shows, further solidifying his standing in the contemporary art scene. Through his intricate use of light, space, and form, Lausten continues to expand the boundaries of how we engage with both the physical and mental aspects of art.
