Marianne Hesselbjerg: Sculpture, Space, and Human Narratives
Marianne Hesselbjerg (born 1949) is a prominent sculptor who blends minimalist sculptural principles with themes such as boundaries, transitions, and universal human references. In 2023, she was awarded the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen Legacy Prize for her ability to create works that transcend time and place.
Educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Hesselbjerg has spent over 30 years exploring site-specific sculptures, using materials such as steel, glass, and aluminum. Her works seamlessly integrate with their surroundings, challenging the viewer through barriers and reflections that focus on the relationship between body and space.
A key work such as Nålehækken (The Needle Hedge) from 1985 — a six-meter-long barrier with 2,200 needles — highlights boundaries as both a physical and conceptual theme. The work remains highly relevant and demonstrates Hesselbjerg’s ability to create art that resonates across generations.
For over 30 years, Hesselbjerg has exhibited at Stalke Gallery, most recently in 2023. Through her uncompromising practice, she has established herself as one of Denmark's most significant sculptors, combining cool aesthetics with profound meaning.
